According to Tibetan oral tradition, the existence of singing bowls dates back to the time of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni (560 – 480 B.C.). The tradition was brought from India to Tibet, along with the teachings of the Buddha, in the 8th century A.D.The use of Tibetan healing bowls has been handed down from generation to generation in India, Nepal and Tibet. The practice has been used since 800 A.D.
Singing bowls produce sounds that invoke a deep state of relaxation, which naturally assists one in entering into meditation, the ultimate goal being enlightenment. They are a quintessential aid to meditation, and can be found on private Buddhist altars, in temples, monasteries and meditation halls throughout the world.
In addition to their traditional usage for meditation, Tibetan singing bowls are used for deep relaxation, stress reduction, holistic healing, Reiki, chakra balancing, and World music. Many people find that the rich blend of harmonics have a direct affect upon their chakras.
Playing the bowls usually cause an immediate centering effect. The tones set up a “frequency following response” that creates a balancing of the left/right brain synchronization. Meditating on the subtle sounds of the Tibetan singing bowl tunes one in to the universal sound, bringing it into the whole body, physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Sound and vibration healing is an effective and proven modality that uses vibration and sound to help reduce stress, alter consciousness and create a deep sense of peace, well being and better health. Sound has also been shown to be effective in the healing process of cancer patients by reducing stress and aiding in pain management.
A Tibetan Bowl Practitioner uses a combination of sacred bowls, gongs, bells, and tingshas to tap into the cellular memory to re-tune the body, release stuck energy, shift dis-ease patterns and bring the physical, emotional, and spiritual energies back into alignment, helping the body to heal.
How does it work?
Tibetan singing bowls are struck and sung in specific rhythmic patterns to create vibrational sound harmonics at the frequency of “AUM” or “OM”. This sound frequency known as that of Perfection; impacts that sympathetic nervous system as your brain waves synchronize to the vibrations of the bowls. The harmonic vibration engage the relaxation reflex, slows down the respiratory, brain and heart rate and disrupt the pain reflex creating a deep sense of well being. Some toning, visualization, and hands on can be integrated into your session.
What are sessions like?
Sessions can be either a half hour or one hour and take place fully clothed either on a massage table or on the floor. Bowls are placed below, around and on the body, head and chakras (energy centers). The bowls are then struck with different mallets to obtain different sounds and vibrations for the body to absorb and release. Clients should wear comfortable clothes without buttons, zippers or jewelry.
Can people who feel fine benefit from a session?
Yes, very much so. Many clients also book a session to gain clarity on an issue, re-vitalize, or just feel great and even more connected to the universe. Tibetan Bowls can be used for group sessions, private sessions, Concerts, Group/Corporate Events and space clearing.
